As Christmas approaches and 2020 winds down, now is a time to reflect on the challenges of the past year and look forward to the future. The restrictions in place throughout the last year have not made life easy for many of us, but businesses and community members in Chichester are making every attempt to bring us some Christmas cheer.
Here are some ways to enjoy the festive season here in Chichester.
Follow the three festive trails through the historic town centre
Residents and visitors of all ages will enjoy the Fairy Tale Trail, which involves a hunt across the city centre for that characters, symbols, and story lines from 12 different fairy tales. As well, the Annual Christmas Window Competition is underway, and you can participate by voting for your favorite and helping them win the People’s Choice Award. A Late Night Shopping Trail for adventurous Christmas shoppers is also available for some festive fun.
Check out the Loyal Free app that is designed specifically to help visitors and residents follow three different festive trails, all of which are accompanied by the beautiful Christmas light displays that have been installed and switched on in North Street, South Street, East Street, and West Street.
Enjoy thinking of loved ones while Christmas shopping
The Chichester business directory lists local shops and businesses that are offering online delivery to any shoppers who prefer to shop from home. A Chichester Gift Card is also available for shoppers who can’t decide what their loved ones will enjoy the most; the gift card can be redeemed at over 140 local businesses, so friends and family members are sure to find something they love. Late-night shopping events are also taking place throughout the festive season. If you or your loved ones need any last-minute Christmas decorations, Hillier Garden Centre on Main Road has a wide selection of beautiful indoor and outdoor baubles, lights, and other festive ornaments.
Appreciate the members of the community who have come together to offer their support
A very special scene awaits you at the Chichester Cathedral on West Street in the historic town centre. The Chichester Nativity at the Chichester Cathedral is a photographic installation that features a composite of characters not from the Bible, but from the local community. Individuals representing providers of essential resources like the Chichester District Foodbank and Stonepillow as well as other community organisations like the Chichester Festival Theatre appear on the art installation.
If these activities don’t bring a smile to your face, and you find you need a bit of extra support, help is available. The Independent Living advice line for Covid-19 mutual aid is taking calls, and if you are on Facebook, a community group offering Coronavirus support for vulnerable residents is live.
