Top Tips to Stay Cool in the Heat

The recent spell of hot weather is predicted to be the longest heatwave in over 40 years, with the potential for the temperatures to reach the highest ever recorded in history in the UK. Whilst it has been enjoyable to bask in the glorious sunshine, it is important that we remember to stay safe and take extra precautions when exposed to prolonged periods of extreme heat. The team at Guardian Angel Carers have put together a list of their top tips to stay cool in the heat.

It’s important to feel comfortable in the heat in addition to keeping cool. Remember, dark colours can make you feel warmer in the heat, so it is best to opt for a cool fabric, such as cotton, in a light colour to reflect the sun. Always remember to wear your hat and sunglasses too. Our CareAngels will be more than happy to help you pick out some loose cool clothing.

At Home

When at home it is advised to keep blinds/curtains closed to avoid the sunlight pouring in and heating up the room. If there is a cool breeze, keep the windows open and find the coolest spot in the house.

Keep Up to Date

The media is a great source to keep up to date with the weather details and how to keep cool. Stay tuned into the local radio, tv channel, or check social media for up to date information.

Stay Hydrated

Hot conditions can cause your body to dehydrate, to help avoid the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, drink plenty of water. Drinking caffeine or high sugar drinks in excess should be avoided in the hot weather.

Keeping your body temperature cool in the hot weather can be challenging. Here are a few things that we have tried here at Guardian Angel’s HQ:

  • Splashing your wrists and neck with water
  • Dipping your feet and ankles into water
  • Have regular drinks or water or diluted fruit drinks
  • Have cool showers or baths
  • Avoiding the sun in the warmest part of the day

Don’t forget to make sure that others around you are coping with the heat too, if you need any more tips then Age Uk have compiled an extensive guide on Staying Cool in a Heatwave
