A Safe, Welcoming Space for Those Living with Dementia and Memory Loss
At Guardian Angel Carers Lincoln & Newark, we believe good care extends beyond supporting people in their own homes. It is also about helping people remain connected, valued, and part of their community.
That is one of the reasons why we are proud to volunteer each week at the Newark Memory Café, held every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm at the Bridge Community Centre on Lincoln Road in Newark.
For many people living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or memory loss, and for the families supporting them, finding the right environment can make a huge difference. The Newark Memory Café provides exactly that. A safe, welcoming, and understanding place where people can relax, socialise, and enjoy time together without judgement.
A Hidden Gem in Newark
The Memory Café has become a real hidden gem within the local community.
From the moment people arrive, there is a warm and friendly atmosphere. Volunteers welcome everyone in, refreshments are available, conversations begin flowing, and people are encouraged to join in at their own pace.
There is no pressure and no expectation. It is simply a place where people can feel comfortable being themselves.
The café welcomes:
- People living with dementia or memory loss
- Family members and carers
- Those who may feel isolated or in need of support
- Anyone looking for understanding and companionship
Activities That Bring People Together
One of the lovely things about the Newark Memory Café is the variety of activities available each week.
The sessions are designed to be relaxed, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone attending. Activities often include:
- Fun quizzes
- Puzzles and word searches
- Games and conversation
- A weekly sing-along
- Refreshments and social time
While these activities may seem simple, they can have a significant impact. They encourage interaction, stimulate memories, promote confidence, and most importantly, bring enjoyment.
The weekly sing-along in particular always creates a wonderful atmosphere. Music has a unique ability to spark memories and connection, even for those who may struggle with other forms of communication.
Why Places Like This Matter
Living with dementia can sometimes feel isolating, not only for the individual but also for those caring for them.
Many carers spend so much time focusing on supporting others that they rarely get an opportunity to relax themselves. The Memory Café gives people a chance to sit down with others who understand, share experiences, and feel part of a supportive community.
For those attending with memory loss, simply being able to enjoy conversation, laughter, and activities in a safe setting can make a huge difference to confidence and wellbeing.
It is often the smaller moments that matter most:
- Sharing a cup of tea
- Completing a puzzle together
- Laughing during a quiz
- Singing along to a familiar song
These moments create connection, comfort, and joy.
Our Role as Volunteers
Our team volunteers at the café each week to help support the sessions, assist with refreshments and activities, and most importantly, spend time with the people attending.
For us, volunteering is not just about giving back. It is also about strengthening community connections and supporting people beyond traditional care settings.
The volunteers involved with the Newark Memory Café are fantastic. Many have personal or professional experience with dementia and Alzheimer’s, which helps create such a compassionate and understanding environment.
You can genuinely feel how much people care.
